The semi-arid plains of Uganda’s north east is home to the country’s real treasures.
It is the appeal of remoteness that makes us guarantee a visitor won’t come off his Safari van in attempt to see wildlife. Kidepo offers some of the wildest and magnificent scenery in Africa. Dominated by Morungole (2750 M) 0n its Eastern flank, Kidepo sits on 1442Km’s ideal for walking safaris. Its home to the Karimojong who maintain their strong pastoralist way oflife.
Facts About the Karimojong!
It is estimated that approximately 370,000 Karimojong reside in Uganda. As a Nilotic group, meaning
“of the Nile,” the Karimojong speak a language of the Nilo-Saharan.Kalenjin sub-family of languages, which are spoken by groups of nomadic herders spread across four nearby nations. The Karimojong first settled near Mount Moroto around 1600 after several migrations from Ethiopia in which many Nilotic branches broke off and settled in other regions. The word Karimojong, or Ngkarimojong from the indigenous language, translates roughly to “the old tired men who stayed behind.”  While many Karimojong are Christian, the group predominantly practices its traditional religion, which does have a primary deity known as Akuj.The Karimojong live and die for cattle — the determinant of seemingly everything in a pastoral life.Thus their traditional dances Emuya and Ekaharo will give you memorable experience.Most of it is dry with few water courses supporting Acacia forests, Kidepo contains Uganda’s most exciting faunas and 77 species of mammals, a bird list of 463 species like the Egyptian vulture, pygmy falcon.
The woodland is and forest largely inhibited with open savanna. Most of the hilltops are capped by rock Kopjes which provide habitats for Klipsinger.
You can also visit the Kanagorok hot springs. Famous accommodation in Kidepo is the Apoka lodge.
